I love to photograph children , of all ages, from toddlers through to teenagers and everything in between. The sessions can take place either in the Studio in Southport or out on location using some of the beautiful places we have nearby – Formby pinewoods, Botanic Gardens, Ainsdale Beach are just a few of the amazing locations I have used .

Children are wonderful to photograph, and sessions can range from Cakes smashes when your little one celebrates their first Birthday, to classic portraits in black and white – have a look at a recent session http://www.jorutherfordphotography.co.uk/2014/01/classic-childrens-portraits/

What should the children wear?

There is time in the session for a couple of outfit changes and its always worth bringing a spare change of clothes . Simple clothing works best , shirts or plain t shirts for the boys , waistcoats look great , classic dresses, or casual jeans a t shirts for the girls .

Try and avoid logos on cloths and strong patterns. Lots of children love dressing up and so if they have a favourite character outfit , feel free to bring it along .

A hairbrush and any accessories- clips and bobbles are essential

Wet wipes are also a great idea to bring along

How to prepare for the session

I know that children have their own ideas about when they want to smile and be adorable! On the day there is no rush and calm happy children have the most fun and that means we get the best images from the session – so don’t worry if they are a little grumpy on the way to the Studio , and don’t worry about whether they will behave – in my experience they do tend to really enjoy the sessions and Mums and Dads get the chance to enjoy watching their children being photographed while having a well deserved brew!
Feel free to bring a snack and drink for the children but please avoid chocolate which always ends up on their clothes!
Don’t worry about making them smile or saying Cheese….. real smiles are the best
